MoveOn applauds passage to Congress of COVID-19 relief package

WASHINGTON, DC – Moments ago, the United States House of Representatives passed the Senate version of President Biden’s COVID-19 relief bill, which will provide millions of people with direct payments of 1,400 dollars, billions of dollars for vaccines and tests, and tax breaks to minimal incomes and families with children, among other vital policies.

In response, Rahna Epting, Executive Director of MoveOn, issued the following statement:

“This is a major step towards crucial aid for millions of Americans who are suffering.

“For nearly a year and more, our nation endured a devastating war with a deadly virus that has killed over half a million people and exacerbated fundamental problems in our society, economy and government. The coronavirus relief bill offers us a chance to get people back on their feet and rebuild systems that have failed too much for too long.

“The elections do indeed have consequences and the US bailout is a great victory for our country.

“We applaud the Democrats in Congress for passing this relief bill and providing urgent assistance to the American people. But this is only the first step on our path to recovery and prosperity. Now all eyes are on President Biden’s commitment to build better. The American people want to see a strong stimulus package that prioritizes creating millions of high-quality, well-paying jobs, tackling the climate crisis, promoting racial justice, investing in healthcare infrastructure, creating a path to citizenship for essential immigrant workers, and more.

“It is shameful that this critical legislation has not won the support of any Republican in the Senate. Make no mistake – the American people see Democrats working for them, while Republicans continue to filibuster, delay and deny.

“America needs help, and we need it now. There’s no time to lose.”
