Those who aided and abetted a deadly insurgency must be held accountable.
Washington DC– Today, MoveOn Civic Action is launching a new national and “Betrayal Caucus” specific accountability campaign to hold politicians accountable for aiding and encouraging a deadly insurgency against the United States government. On January 6, the American people saw a host of violent national terrorists, white supremacists, storm the Capitol at the behest of Donald Trump. But Trump did not act alone. For months elected Republican leaders conspired with him to lie to the American public about the election. Many of these Republicans embraced and encouraged the rallying cry of criminal rioters – even after killing a police officer – by voting to overturn the election results. MoveOn and its millions of members will now hold these Republicans accountable.
“When the country saw a violent Trump mob storm the Capitol, we saw the impact of months of delusional lies about electoral fraud and Donald Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric come to fruition in deadly ways,” said Rahna Epting, Executive Director of MoveOn Civic Action. “But Trump did not act alone. He had the help of elected officials who, like Trump, now have blood on their hands. Those who led this insurgency – since Donald Trump – must be held accountable. Nothing less than our democracy is at stake. If we don’t act now, Cruz, Hawley and their group of conspiracy theorists will still retain power in an office they have dishonored and do not deserve to be. ‘to occupy.
MoveOn is launching a multi-faceted “Betrayal Caucus” accountability campaign that includes the following:
- Takeover of the newspapers home page to remind voters how their Senators failed. MoveOn targets Josh Hawley (R-MO), Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) with takeovers of ads on the homepage of the Kansas City Star, Houston Chronicle, and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel websites, respectively.
